The Eat at Joe's Kawai K5000 Message Board Digest Ideas for a Patch Editor ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Patch Editor Wishlist Tuesday, 24-Mar-98 06:44:03 12.68.131.136 writes: What would you like to see in a patch editor for the K5K??? Anyone who has had ample time to program the K5000 will attest to there being no lack of interesting parameters and relationships between those parameters. Thanks to the fellows at EMagic for the SoundDiver, I would be lost without it! There are certain parameters that still are particularly difficult to program however, for example; harmonic envelopes. You have to go harmonic by harmonic and it is tedious. I like that level of control, but not all of the time. There are times when I wish I could have the ability to set up a few envelopes and scale them across a range that I input. My list goes on and on... And you? What would you like to see in a dedicated patch editor? When you program the K5K what do you find yourself saying you wish you had the ability to easily tweak? I am really curious as to what others feel would make the wealth of parameters and controls in Kawai's Additive Synthesis more approachable. (they have given us quite a bit to contemplate, haven't they?) UNQUOTE Have you used the "triangle" and "rectangle" edit groups? These can speed things up a little. The width of the block you're grabbing is set by the "wid" parameter, which is between "harmonic number" and "harmonic level". QUOTE What would you like to see in a dedicated patch editor? UNQUOTE A-#1 First Priority: A program that DOESN'T LOCK UP when the screensaver goes on or the program is minimized or some other application is opened. I've had to develop all sorts of rituals to avoid losing any program changes. I'm in Win95. QUOTE When you program the K5K what do you find yourself saying you wish you had the ability to easily tweak? UNQUOTE How about telling you how much memory is occupied or free in each bank? How about a window for displaying the condition of all 16 realtime controllers at once? How about displaying real units for each parameter? (This depends on Kawai, too.) All considered, tho, it's already a godsend, except for the locking up problem. leiter@skypoint.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Re: Patch Editor Wishlist Thursday, 26-Mar-98 08:12:07 130.67.2.247 writes: QUOTE There are times when I wish I could have the ability to set up a few envelopes and scale them across a range that I input. UNQUOTE That is one possibility. I would also like to adjust all harmonics that are above or below a certain value. Consider the situation that you have defined a handful of harmonics and have just reduced their amplitudes with ALL. If you want them back up again, you will increase the amplitudes of all 64 harmonics if you use ALL. This could be handled by means of a "pivot adjustment". You enter the pivot value in some field and then choose ABOVE or BELOW (on the list with BRIGHT thru EACH) in order to adjust all amplitudes above or below that value. And, needless to say, it would be VERY convenient if we could enter times instead of or in addition to rates. Given a few improvements of this sort, I would have no need for SoundDiver. Other possibilities include physical models. These did not have to be implemented as real-time functions. They could be bundled with MORF in a group of "calculator functions" that produced wave sets for further tweaking by hand. Anyone heard rumors about the next version of the OS?
